DRIVEN BY SOUND is one of 13 selected to address specific technology gaps, enhancing the performance, reliability, and scalability of self-driving vehicles in the UK and worldwide.
DRIVEN BY SOUND aims to create an affordable, robust navigation system for automated vehicles, with a particular emphasis on adverse weather handling. The system boasts a high-performance computer capable of supporting all levels of automated and autonomous driving, setting a new standard for safety and reliability. It incorporates next-generation 3-D ultrasound sensors to ensure safety and redundancy, ruggedisation for durability, and robust cybersecurity measures. Its modular design ensures compatibility with system-on-chip variants from industry leaders, like Qualcomm, Nvidia, and TI, offering tailored computing power for specific applications. Driven by sound, it enables automated vehicles or platforms to execute minimum risk manoeuvres (MRMs) and safely pull over, enhancing overall safety and reliability.
Overall, our project combines cutting-edge technology, reliability in adverse conditions, and advanced safety features to deliver a state-of-the-art vehicle navigation system that paves the way for a smooth transition to Level 5 autonomy.
DRIVEN BY SOUND is part of CCAV’s Commercialising CAM Supply Chain Competition (CCAMSC). The Commercialising CAM programme is funded by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, a joint unit between the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK and Zenzic.
The CCAM Supply Chain competition was launched in October 2022 to support the delivery of early commercialisable Connected and Automated Mobility technologies, products and services and is part of the Government’s vision for self-driving vehicles.
DRIVEN BY SOUND is aligned with the Government’s mission to enhance safety and security. It will deliver a fundamental vehicle navigation system designed for operation in all weather conditions and fully adaptable to various vehicle types, from low-speed logistics, to port movers, and commercial vehicles. The project not only enhances public perception but also fast-tracks the journey to Level 5 autonomy, ensuring that the full societal benefits of CAM are within reach.
